Green Office Program

What is the Green Office Program?

The Green Office Program is a new program led by George Mason University's Office of Sustainability, with input from AE Green and University Life, which recognizes offices on Mason's campuses that have taken concrete steps to reduce their environmental footprint. The program outlines a specific set of measures and actions (some of which are required, some of which are optional) that departments and offices can take to become a Mason Certified Green Office. The area covered for your office is defined as the space assigned to your department, as listed in the space management database at http://facilities.gmu.edu/space/index.htm. If you need further assistance finding out what this area is, please contact the Office of Sustainability, at gogreen[at]gmu.edu.

What is the purpose of the program?

The purpose of the Green Office Program is to help Mason become more sustainable, one office and department at a time. Because there are so many offices and departments throughout campus, the Office of Sustainability wanted to create a fun and practical program that every office, no matter how big or small, could adopt and implement. The program provides concrete actions and the resources needed to implement each action effectively. It manages to provide a unique and exciting way for offices to create community, while creating competition as a means to incentivize offices to reduce their environmental impact. Your office or department could be certified by the Office of Sustainability as a Bronze, Silver, or Gold office.

How do we facilitate the Green Office process?

Someone from your office should be a member of the George Mason University Green Patriots Program. If you are unsure of who is representing your office or whether or not your office has a Green Patriot, contact the Office of Sustainability at gogreen[at]gmu.edu. Among other things, Faculty, Staff and Student Green Patriots are responsible for facilitating the Green Office program and you should contact them to get involved. For offices without a Green Patriot, any authorized member of that office may implement the program using our Implementation Guide. Contact the Office of Sustainability to assist in this process.

What are the categories in the Green Office program?

Energy, Waste Reduction and Recycling, Pollution Prevention, Transportation, Purchasing, Participation, and Innovation.

What are the Green office levels?

Offices or departments that want to achieve the Bronze level needs to score at least 25 points, Silver is 50 points, and Gold is 75 points or higher.
